My name is Tyson Hankins and I have been teaching piano privately for approximately five years. In addition to private instruction, I have also taught through the First Baptist Church of Jacksonville School of Music (www.fbcjax.com) for approximately one year. I received my undergraduate Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance and composition & theory at Jacksonville University (www.ju.edu) of Jacksonville, Florida, where I studied under Professor Mary Lou-Wesley Krosnick (piano) and Dr. William Schirmer (composition). I am currently living in Greensboro, NC pursuing my graduate degree from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro (www.uncg.edu) in piano accompanying and chamber music.
I teach a variety of ages and levels up through intermediate. For beginners, I typically encourage the use of the Alfred series of piano books, but I will work out of other books that have already been purchased by the student. I also use a lot of personal resources to put together exercises and lessons that will help the beginning student progress at a quicker rate. I specialize in classical music, Christian music (hymns, contemporary songs, chord-reading, etc.), and beginning piano music. I also value personal exploration and inquisitiveness. I will not be the type of teacher that forces a student to learn the instrument a certain way. I am always looking for new ways to reach piano students with the knowledge they need to enjoy the piano. While I do require practice from the student, I realize that I cannot force one to practice. All I can do is encourage good practice habits and stimulate a love for or, at least, an interest in playing the piano and in music.
My normal rates are $12.50 per half-hour lesson and I usually give a half-hour lesson per week. If you would like an hour lesson, the price will be $25.00 per hour lesson. Discounts are only given if I’m teaching to a few people from the same household and are considered on a case by case basis. I normally teach at a couple of different places depending on what would be convenient for the student. The first option is to teach at my church, Southeast Baptist Church (5011 Liberty Road). Since this is not a centrally located place in Greensboro, I can also come to your house and teach there (provided you have the necessary equipment, of course). Unfortunately, due to an increased cost in travel expenses, there will be a $5.00 charge per student/household per lesson if I am required to come to you.
